This synagogue was in used from 1907 to 1939. When Hitler rise to power during World War II, the synagogue was turned into a swimming pool. Since then, the appearance and interior of the synagogue have changed dramatically. Now this former synagogue is in emptied and waiting to be repurposed. I was introduced and brought into this dysfunctional synagogue after joining my Jewish friend at the Passover Festival in April 2019. I found the paint in some part of the building peeled off, so some of the old ceiling revealed. I then researched for a painting of this 100-year-old synagogue and found a matching pattern. Uncanning- ly, it seemed to me that the prayers and their spirits remained there. As an exhibition item, I showed a picture of the ceiling pattern from the old, dysfunctional synagogue; I have asked a Jewish friend who is a practicing Pastor and is fluent in Hebrew, to read prayers in this abandoned synagogue. Her choices of the prayers in Hebrew recreate the feeling she had when she read them. On the video loop, when my Jewish friend finishes praying and sees the sunlight shine through the window to the abandoned synagogue, the next cycle begins and replay again. I am trying to create the sense that such prayer ritual will continue to be echoed within this synagogue space forever.
このシナゴーグは1907年から1939年まで使用されており、第二次世界大戦中にヒトラーが政権を握るとプールに変えられてしまいました。それ以来、シナゴーグの外観や内装は大きく変わり今ではこの旧シナゴーグは空っぽの状態で、ホテルに変わる事が決まっていました。 私は、2019年4月の過越祭でユダヤ人の友人と合流した後、この廃墟になったシナゴーグを教えてもらい、建物の一部の塗装が剥がれていて、古い天井の一部が大きく露出しているのを見つけた。 調査したところ100年前のこのシナゴーグを描いた絵があり天井の絵柄が一致する事がわかった、それは祈りと想いがエコーになって聞こえるように感じました。 牧師として活動しヘブライ語に堪能なユダヤの人に、ヘブライ語の祈りを朗読してもらっています。映像では、彼女が祈りを終え、窓から廃墟のシナゴーグに差し込む陽光を見ると、シナゴーグの外からまたもう1人の同じ姿の彼女が扉をあけ次のサイクルが始まります、この終わりが近づいているシナゴーグの空間に永遠の祈りが響き続ける事を想像します。プールに変えられてしまったシナゴーグにはプールの鍵のタグが大量に散乱しており、それはユダヤのシンボルがエコーしているように並べ直しました。
